Although daily brushing and flossing is the foundation for a healthy mouth, there are things you can do to ensure your teeth avoid tooth decay. Dental sealants are just one of the ways your dentist can keep cavities at bay!

What is a dental sealant? This is a thin coating made of plastic which your dentist paints onto the chewing surfaces of your tooth. This is typically the back teeth, or molars. The dental sealant acts as a shield on your molars as it bonds onto the grooves of the tooth.

This prevents tooth decay because it effectively seals out plaque and food that might otherwise be missed during brushing by getting trapped in the tooth depressions.

You may benefit from dental sealants if you are an adult and you don’t have cavities or fillings in your molars. If you have children they will surely benefit from protective sealants as they age.

Dental sealants are also a good investment because they can last up to ten years if properly cared for. Never skip your dental cleanings because that is also a good time for your dentist to catch any chips in a molar or deterioration of your sealants.
