At one point or another we are all faced with a plastic bag that refuses to open or a piece of string that needs to be cut, yet there’s no scissors at hand. While Dr. Barry LeJeune knows the temptation to use your teeth as a tool is great, he still strongly warns against it.

Your teeth have been designed by the ancient forces of evolution to bite off, chew and grind food. While they can handle even the hardest and toughest of foods, they are still not intended to be used as replacement tools. The unnatural forces applied by ignoring this can greatly increase your chances of suffering a chip, fracture or even worse complications.

Even if the damaged tooth enamel causes you no pain, it’s still wise to have the tooth examined and repaired. The compromised area will easily encourage tooth decay issues.

In some cases, a chip or minor fracture can be repaired by Dr. Barry LeJeune by applying a standard filling. If the damage to the tooth enamel is significant, he might recommend restoring the tooth with a crown made from porcelain, gold or base metal alloys.

In an extreme case, where the damage to the tooth has compromised the pulp of root of the tooth, Dr. Barry LeJeune might need to perform a root canal, before installing a crown.

While the temptation to use your teeth as tools might be great, it is simply not worth the risk. If one of your teeth has been damaged in this way, you should call Dr. Barry LeJeune’s office in Hampton, Virginia at (757) 827-9114 to schedule an appointment.
